Ensuring No Student Slips Through the Cracks
In a large school, it is crucial to have strategies in place to ensure that no student goes unnoticed or unsupported. At Laurie's, we have implemented several effective measures to make sure every boy is seen, heard, and guided throughout his educational journey.
House System
One of the key strategies is our House system. Each student belongs to a House, which serves as a smaller community within the larger school. This system ensures that every boy is known personally by his Head of House (HOH) and Home Class teacher. Their Head of House and Home Class teacher stay with the students throughout their entire journey at Laurie's, providing consistent support and guidance. Home Class teachers play a significant role in this, as they regularly check in with students, both academically and personally. These mentors are trained to recognise signs of struggle or distress and can intervene early to provide the necessary support. This proactive approach helps in preventing students from slipping through the cracks.
Mentoring Program
Our mentoring program is another cornerstone of our support strategy. Each student meets with a mentor throughout the year. These meetings are designed to address both academic progress and personal wellbeing. Mentors help students set goals, monitor their progress and provide guidance on any challenges they may face. This one-on-one attention ensures that each student receives personalised support tailored to their individual needs.
Comprehensive Support
In addition to these structured programs, we foster a school culture that emphasises the importance of looking out for one another. Teachers, staff and students are encouraged to be vigilant and supportive, creating an environment where everyone feels responsible for the wellbeing of their peers. Regular communication between teachers, mentors and parents also plays a crucial role in ensuring that any concerns are promptly addressed. The College’s amazing Counselling Team are also available to students who need assistance with a variety of issues.
