Exploring the cells and microscopes - Year 10 Biology

This week in the Science faculty I observed Mr Anthony Bird's Year 10 Biology class. He challenged the students to recall past processes, to be able to observe and draw cells being viewed with a microscope as well as calculate the magnification of the images they were viewing. The students had to work from a given starting point, see their errors, reflect on how to improve, and complete the skills required. Students struggled to see the cells due to bubbles, microscope focus issues and problems separating the onion into thin enough pieces to be able to see an individual cell. They then practiced reflecting and problem solving so as to be able to complete the task and the workbook associated.

This linked in with the “challenge” domain of the learning framework, by not only allowed the students to practice an important biological skill which develops mastery of it, but also through differentiation, allowing all students to work through their problems at their own pace, with varying levels of support.
