Educating the whole person

I was reminded at our Sports Assembly last week, about the importance of cocurricular activities in forming and developing the Laurie’s Gentleman. Indeed, while many can perceive cultural activities, sport and service to be a distraction to student study, I see it as a way to connect with the community in a different way. It provides students with essential life skills such as teamwork, collaboration, strategy development and problem solving. We also know that high performing students who are busy but take a break from study by participating in other activities, are typically those that are most successful in achieving their ATAR/VET Certificate goals.

I congratulate all our students who continue to participate in those activities outside the daily work in their timetabled classes.

Year 12 External Assessment Information.

I have sent information to Year 12 students and parents regarding expectations of External Exams via previous editions of the newsletter.

We ask that you help us to reinforce the below expectations with students:

  • Students are asked to arrive at the scheduled arrival time. This will allow for marshalling, equipment checking and arrangement in alphabetical order. This will also help prevent unnecessary stress due to students arriving late.
  • Mobile phones MUST be left in lockers. Students in possession of mobile phones may be removed from the exam room due to academic misconduct, and their exam mark could be affected – thus negatively impacting their ATAR.
  • Students must bring the correct equipment for their exam.
  • Students are highly encouraged to utilise every second of the exam time, check, re-check and check answers again if finished early.
  • Students are not permitted to leave the exam room early.

We are also providing opportunities for Vocational students to catch up on their competencies if needed. Students are highly encouraged to discuss the potential for these sessions with their teachers.

Our students and staff have worked extremely hard to prepare for this very important assessment block. I wish all students well in their endeavours to achieve the best they can achieve.

Secondary Excellence Awards Night – Thursday 17 October

A reminder that our annual secondary awards night is being held on Thursday 17 October. The event starts at 6.30pm, with pre-event nibbles and student displays from 5.15pm. We ask that all students who are receiving an award, attend their scheduled rehearsal time (at some stage during the day on either Wednesday 16/10 or Thursday 17/10), and that they are in their allocated seat by 6.00pm for last minute messages. Award lists will be on display outside Pastoral Precinct.

Congratulations to all involved!
