Australian Curriculum – Learning About Respectful Relationships

The Australian Curriculum outlines essential requirements for teaching personal and social skills, with a specific focus on respectful relationships. In Years Five and Six, the Health and Physical Education curriculum emphasises the development of skills to initiate and manage relationships, alongside exploring how emotions impact behaviour and relationships. This knowledge is formally cultivated through scheduled HPE and Laurie’s Journey lessons.

The Personal and Social Capability, a core component of the Australian Curriculum's General Capabilities, underscores the recognition and regulation of emotions, fostering empathy, and establishing positive relationships across all learning areas.

Learning about respectful relationships is carefully planned, age-appropriate, and sequentially integrated into the curriculum. Importantly, these skills—such as respect, effective communication, and trust—are not only taught but also actively demonstrated and reinforced through daily interactions among students and between students and staff.

Respect and the cultivation of respectful relationships are pivotal for a cohesive Australian society. Schools play a crucial role in fostering this understanding among students. The Australian Curriculum offers diverse opportunities to support this educational endeavour.
